The Oregon Ducks' search for a new floor general has hit a snag, as a key transfer portal target is heading elsewhere. Hofstra guard Preston Edmead, who visited Eugene this week, has committed to the NC State Wolfpack, dealing a blow to Dana Altman's offseason plans.
Missing out on Edmead stings for the Ducks, as he was one of the most coveted guards available. The CAA Freshman of the Year made an immediate impact, averaging 16.1 points and 4.4 assists per game and leading Hofstra to an NCAA Tournament berth. His 24-point performance against Alabama in the tournament showcased the dynamic scoring and playmaking Oregon was hoping to add.
The urgency for a point guard in Eugene is high following significant roster turnover. The departure of All-Big Ten guard Jackson Shelstad, coupled with exits from other primary ball-handlers, left a glaring hole in the backcourt. Securing a player of Edmead's caliber was a top priority to stabilize the lineup for the upcoming season.
While the Ducks have successfully added frontcourt talent like Tyrone Riley, Andrew Meadow, and Pharaoh Compton from the portal, the crucial point guard spot remains unfilled. Riley offers some secondary ball-handling, but the search for a true primary conductor continues. Oregon's coaching staff is reportedly active with other guards, but for now, a major target is off the board as Edmead heads to Raleigh to join new NC State head coach Justin Gainey.
