The Oregon Ducks men's track and field team is off to a flying start at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, sitting in first place after an action-packed Day 1 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Despite a lengthy weather delay, the Ducks showed their championship mettle, proving once again why they're a powerhouse in the sport.
Leading the charge was newcomer Luke Tewalt, a senior transfer from Wake Forest, who delivered a stunning victory in the men's 10,000 meters. Tewalt crossed the finish line in 29 minutes, 49.24 seconds, securing Oregon's first win of the meet. The race was the final event of the day, pushed back nearly two hours due to inclement weather, but Tewalt remained unfazed. He wasn't alone in the points haul—teammates Evan Bishop (third, 29:50.63) and Evan Burke (fifth, 29:53.43) added crucial depth to the Ducks' performance.
On the women's side, Anika Thompson made a strong return to competition, placing fourth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 33:47.18. It was her first race since the NCAA cross country championships, and she showed no signs of rust. However, defending conference champion Diana Cherotich struggled late in the race and didn't finish, while Big Ten No. 2 runner Silan Ayyildiz—a surprise entry in the event—also failed to cross the line.
The Ducks' javelin squad turned heads with an impressive 18-point performance. Freshman Daniel Thrana led the way with a second-place throw of 254 feet, 9 inches, while senior Pat Viala delivered a personal-best toss of 253-11 to finish third, moving him to No. 4 on Oregon's all-time performers list. Freshman Vlad Turcu also set a new PR with a fifth-place mark of 225-11.
In the women's pole vault, Emily Fitzsimmons tied her own Oregon school record with a clearance of 14 feet, 8¼ inches, earning a third-place finish. She cleared the height on her third attempt before passing at 14-10¼ and narrowly missing at 15-¼. Fitzsimmons originally set the program record on April 17 during the Oregon Team Invitational at Hayward Field.
The Ducks also looked sharp on the track, with Simeon Birnbaum cruising through his men's 1,500-meter qualifying heat in 3:54.45 to advance to Sunday's final. Elliott Cook joined him by finishing second in his heat in 3:45.15, while Jeffrey Rogers also moved on. With a strong mix of veterans and rising stars, Oregon is poised to build on this momentum as the championships continue.
