Only 'crazy offer' would take McInnes from Hearts - Neilson

Hearts fans won't want to give the suggestion of Derek McInnes leaving the club any credence, but with more success comes more attention. Should Hearts go on to win this season's title, becoming the first non-Old Firm side to do so in 41 years, the eyes of the world will be on Tynecastle for the celebrations, and the eyes of the footballing world will focus on the man who masterminded their triumph. Former Hearts manager Robbie Neilson doesn't expect McInnes to be anywhere else come the start of next season, but knows a "crazy offer" could change anything.

Hearts fans might not want to entertain the idea of Derek McInnes leaving Tynecastle, but success has a way of attracting attention. If the Gorgie side goes on to win the Scottish Premiership this season—becoming the first non-Old Firm club to do so in 41 years—the spotlight will shine brightly on the man behind the triumph.

Former Hearts manager Robbie Neilson believes McInnes will still be at the helm come next season, but he acknowledges that a "crazy offer" could change everything. "I'd be surprised if he's not there next season," Neilson said. "The season they've had has been amazing—European football next year, potentially Champions League. With Tony Bloom reinvesting, the team will only get stronger. Unless it's a crazy offer—and I'm talking about Premier League clubs in England or big teams abroad—I don't think he'll jump."

McInnes took over at Hearts in May 2025 after guiding Kilmarnock to the Scottish Championship title and European football. Neilson suggests the only job that might tempt him away is the Scotland national team role, but the timing may not be right. "The Scotland one is interesting, depending on what happens with Steve Clarke. It looks like he'll leave after the World Cup campaign. Derek would be the number one choice by a country mile. But now he's at Hearts, with a potential title win and European football on the horizon, I just don't think the timing's right for Derek."
