Sometimes in sports, a single opportunity can offer a glimpse into the future. That was the case this past Saturday at the Glacier Park College Soccer Showcase, where a notable halftime substitution turned heads. As Evergreen State and Spokane Falls Community College returned to the pitch, Columbia Falls high school senior Jackson Scholz took the field for the Sasquatch, seizing a unique 35-minute run against college-level competition.
For Scholz, a standout from the 2025 Wildcats, this was more than just an exhibition. "They reached out beforehand, and I got the gear and I was looking forward to playing with them," he said. The senior is coming off a stellar final high school campaign where he was the team's second-leading scorer, netting 13 goals and adding 8 assists. His season ended in heartbreak with a shootout loss in the Class A semifinals, making this college showcase a perfect chance to reset and look ahead.
The match provided a valuable taste of the next level. "It was a lot more physical than I was used to," Scholz noted. "It was a lot more fast-paced, I assumed it was going to be, and it was a great time. I hope to do it again." The experience was made even more special by facing off against former Wildcats teammates Finley Sundberg and Walt Nichols, now sophomores for Evergreen State, reuniting a trio that once won a state championship together.
This unique opportunity was orchestrated by Columbia Falls coach O’Brien Byrd, aiming to inspire local soccer talent by bringing college soccer to the Flathead Valley. With both SFCC and Evergreen State actively recruiting him, Scholz's collegiate destination remains undecided. But one thing is clear: when presented with a chance to test himself against college players in front of his community, Jackson Scholz was never going to let that pass slip away.
