RB Leipzig head coach Ole Werner has delivered a positive injury update on defenders David Raum and Castello Lukeba, giving fans hope that the duo could return for Saturday's top-of-the-table clash against Bayer Leverkusen.
Both players missed last week's convincing 3-1 victory over 1. FC Union Berlin, but Werner confirmed on Thursday that the pair have now returned to full training. While this puts them in contention for the squad, the final call on their availability won't come until after Friday's training session.
"Except for Leo [Zingerle], [Ezechiel] Banzuzi and [Suleman] Sani, everyone else is at least an option for the squad. With Castello [Lukeba] and David [Raum], we will make the final decisions on how we can use them after tomorrow's final training session," Werner explained.
The timing couldn't be more crucial for Leipzig, who currently sit third in the Bundesliga standings. A trip to the BayArena to face defending champions Leverkusen is always a stern test, and having key defensive options like Raum and Lukeba available would be a significant boost. Raum's attacking energy from left-back and Lukeba's composure at center-back have been vital to Leipzig's solid start this season.
With the squad otherwise largely fit, Werner will be hoping for positive news after Friday's session to give his side the best possible chance of climbing the table this weekend.
