The Rebels entered as the four seed behind Auburn, Florida and Texas. Match play began on Saturday where Ole Miss swept No. 5 Texas A&M, 3-0. The second round of match play saw the Rebs take on the number one team in the country in the Auburn Tigers.
After Ole Miss upset the Tigers, the number two team in the country, the Florida Gators, were waiting in the championship. Behind a red hot Tom Fischer, the Rebels clinched the title 4-1. Fischer, Cameron Tankersly and Collins Trolio were all 3-0 in match play on the weekend. Ole Miss led the way with 70 birdies, 20 of which belonged to Collins Trolio.
Fischer got a 5 & 4 leadoff win over Florida. What is that you ask? I had to look myself. Fischer was ahead by five strokes with only four holes remaining. He was six under through 14 when he was awarded the win.
Fischer is ranked the No. 10 golfer in the country, the only Rebel in the top 45 as Tankersley (46) and Trolio (55) are just outside the mark. Tankersley won a 1UP match to put the Gators away. You may also be wondering what that means, because I was. It is the tightest possible margin of victory in match play. It means, entering the 18th hole, if you are one up on your opponent, winning or tying the hole equals match victory.
Ole Miss will now turn their eyes to the NCAA Regionals which begins on May 18.
