Old Dominion split a Friday doubleheader against Arkansas State, dominating the opener 8–0 before falling 6-0 in the nightcap. The schedule was moved up to avoid forecasted bad weather, setting the stage for a day of highs and lows for the Monarchs (23-23, 10-13 Sun Belt).
From the first pitch of Game 1, ODU looked locked in. Efrain Morales sparked the offense with an RBI single in the first inning, and the Monarchs never looked back. By the third inning, they had built a commanding 7-0 lead. Macaddin Dye and Nick Felton worked walks in the second, setting up TJ Aiken's run-scoring single. Will Johnson then drove in Felton to make it 3-0.
The third inning was the knockout punch. After Scotty Young was hit by a pitch and Dye singled, Felton delivered another RBI. Aiken walked to load the bases, and Johnson smashed a two-run single. Zach Leite capped the four-run rally with an RBI single, pushing the lead to 7-0. ODU tacked on one more in the seventh when Maverick Stallings doubled and scored on Young's single.
Johnson was the offensive star, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Leite, Morales, and Stallings each added two hits as the Monarchs racked up 13 total. On the mound, Darin Kuskie (3-6) was electric, tossing six scoreless innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts. Ben Tanton closed with three shutout frames, fanning four for his first save. The duo combined for 15 strikeouts in a dominant performance.
Game 2 was a different story early on, with both pitchers dealing. ODU starter JJ Gatti retired the first six batters and kept Arkansas State scoreless through four innings. The Monarchs threatened in the fourth when Morales doubled with two outs, but couldn't push a run across.
The deadlock broke in the fifth when Arkansas State capitalized on a walk and hit batters, then delivered a two-run single to take a 2-0 lead. The Red Wolves added four more runs late, handing ODU a tough 6-0 loss and splitting the doubleheader.
