The Ohio State men's basketball program is strengthening its roster with a strategic addition from the transfer portal, this time landing a player with deep Ohio roots. Head coach Jake Diebler has secured a commitment from former Duquesne guard Jimmie Williams, a native of Solon, Ohio, who brings proven scoring and veteran experience to the Buckeyes' backcourt.
Williams, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, is coming off a standout season at Duquesne where he earned Atlantic-10 All-Conference Third Team honors. He averaged an impressive 15.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, showcasing a versatile offensive skill set. His defensive impact was equally notable, as he ranked sixth in the A-10 with 1.6 steals per game, demonstrating the two-way potential that will be valuable in the competitive Big Ten.
His journey to Columbus is a testament to his development. After starring at Solon High School, Williams honed his game through a post-graduate year and two highly productive JUCO seasons, where he was named an NJCAA All-American. Following a season at South Florida, he truly broke out at Duquesne, starting all 33 games and scoring in double figures 29 times, including six 20-point performances.
This move addresses a key need for the Buckeyes. With the recent transfers of guards Taison Chatman, Gabe Cupps, and Mathieu Grujicic, there are significant minutes available in the rotation. Williams' experience is crucial for a relatively young roster; he will be the only senior on a team currently composed of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. He is expected to provide reliable depth and scoring punch behind projected starters Justin Pippen and John Mobley Jr., offering Coach Diebler a seasoned option who understands what it takes to compete at a high level.
For fans, Williams' arrival signals a continued focus on building a competitive, well-rounded team. His Ohio background and proven track record make him an exciting player to watch as the Buckeyes look to make noise in the upcoming season.
