Ohio State men's basketball is making a major splash with the hiring of Mike Wells—a Central Ohio native whose resume reads like a basketball Hall of Fame highlight reel. With two NBA championships and an Olympic gold medal to his name, Wells brings over three decades of elite-level experience to head coach Jake Diebler's staff.

Wells, 54, steps in to replace Joel Justus, who recently departed for an assistant role at Vanderbilt. But this isn't just a routine coaching swap—it's a homecoming for a guy who grew up in Mount Vernon and has spent his entire career climbing the ranks of professional basketball.

Most recently, Wells served as head coach of the Adelaide 36ers in Australia's National Basketball League, where he posted a solid 41-31 record over two seasons. He came within a whisker of an NBL title, pushing the Sydney Kings to overtime in a decisive Game 5. After stepping down, Wells shared a heartfelt message about family being the driving force behind his return: "Having spent some time back home in Utah with my sons, seeing my dad who is getting older...I know the decision to step down to be with my family is right."

Wells' journey to Columbus is a masterclass in perseverance. After playing at Mount Vernon Nazarene, he started his coaching career there as an assistant in 1993. From there, it was off to the NBA, where he interned with the Houston Rockets in 1994-95—and that was just the beginning. Over the next three decades, Wells would work for six NBA teams, including the Rockets (1994-2004), Los Angeles Lakers (2004-05), San Antonio Spurs (2005-09), Washington Wizards (2009-11), Utah Jazz (2014-22), and Charlotte Hornets (2023-24).

His trophy case is nothing short of impressive: an NBA title with the 1995 Rockets, another with the 2007 Spurs, and a gold medal as a scout for USA Basketball during the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He's also been a fixture at the NBA's Basketball Without Borders camps, helping grow the game globally.

For Ohio State fans, this hire signals a commitment to championship-level experience. Wells has seen it all—from scouting international talent to breaking down film for title-winning teams. Expect Diebler's squad to benefit from that wealth of knowledge immediately, especially on the defensive end and in player development. Welcome home, Coach Wells—Buckeye Nation is ready.
