The Ohio State Buckeyes are making major upgrades both on the field and in the locker room. On May 15, the university announced that Ohio Stadium will receive a brand-new playing surface in time for the 2026 season, along with fresh uniform details that have fans buzzing.
The new turf, installed by The Motz Group, comes from Shaw Sports Turf's Forge Series. This isn't just any synthetic field—it's designed to meet the latest NFL requirements. According to Shaw's website, the turf integrates numbers, hash marks, yard lines, and logos directly into the surface. This eliminates the old cut-and-glue inlay process, which has long been a headache for maintenance and installation crews across the industry.
One of the most exciting features? The new technology allows for customizable end zones. Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork explained in a press release that this will let the Buckeyes "utilize customizable end zones that amplify themed game atmospheres." Imagine special designs for rivalry games, playoff matchups, or other big moments at the Horseshoe.
Player safety was also a key factor in the decision. Head coach Ryan Day noted that "the new turf is a welcomed upgrade to Ohio Stadium to maintain the safety and performance of our players on gamedays." The old field was a "slit film" surface, which the NFL Players Association had flagged for statistically higher rates of non-contact injuries during games compared to other surfaces. The switch to the Forge Series should address those concerns while keeping the Buckeyes performing at their peak.
The field will continue to be sponsored by Safelite, maintaining a familiar partnership for fans.
But the upgrades don't stop at the turf. Ohio State also revealed new uniform details for the 2026 season. The core home jersey, modeled by quarterback Julian Sayin, now features the iconic Buckeye stripe on the shoulder sleeves—a nod to tradition with a fresh twist. Meanwhile, cornerback Jermaine Mathews Jr. showcased the 2026 core away uniform, which also incorporates the stripe design. These subtle but impactful changes give the Buckeyes a clean, modern look that honors their storied history.
For Buckeye fans, 2026 is shaping up to be a year of transformation, blending cutting-edge technology with classic style. Whether you're cheering from the stands or repping the gear, this is a season to get excited about.
