Ohio State football fans know that the offseason is a time for recovery and preparation—and apparently, that applies to the coaching staff, too.
On May 9, Buckeyes defensive coordinator Matt Patricia took to Instagram to share a glimpse of his own "offseason repair." The photo shows Patricia lying on a hospital bed, wearing a neck brace and his signature flat cap, with a smile on his face. It's a reminder that even the architects of championship defenses need a little maintenance now and then.
"Off-season repairs aren't just for players," Patricia wrote in the post. "Massive thanks to Dr Viljoen and the Neurological Specialty Care team for taking care of me. Incredible group! So blessed and thankful for you."
While Patricia didn't dive into specifics, the post credits Dr. Stephanus Viljoen, an Ohio State neurosurgeon who specializes in spinal surgeries and back pain, according to his university profile. Given the high-stress, high-impact nature of football—even from the sideline—it's no surprise that a coach might need some time to recharge and heal up.
For Buckeyes fans, this is a reassuring sign that Patricia is taking care of himself as he prepares to lead Ohio State's defense into the 2026 season. After all, a healthy coordinator means a sharper game plan—and that's something every fan can get behind.
