It's the end of an era at Stamford Bridge. Sam Kerr, the Australian superstar who has defined Chelsea Women's dominance for over half a decade, has officially announced she will leave the club at the end of the season. This isn't a prank like her last contract renewal—this time, it's real.
When Kerr first signed for Chelsea in the winter of 2019, she was already a global icon: a Ballon d'Or nominee, the all-time leading scorer in both the American and Australian professional leagues. But she wanted more. And she delivered. Over six and a half legendary seasons, she has racked up nearly a dozen trophies, becoming the club's all-time leading WSL scorer with 64 goals. Across all competitions, she sits just one goal behind Fran Kirby with 115 in 177 appearances—and with one game left this season, she could still tie or surpass that record. Remarkably, she achieved all this while missing over a year due to an ACL injury.
Kerr's arrival was the landmark signing that helped propel Chelsea to the very top of women's football. Now, her boots—both figuratively and literally—will be incredibly hard to fill. Reflecting on her time at the club, Kerr shared: "When I reflect on my Chelsea career, I just feel happy. Happy that it happened, and so grateful to have played for this club for six years and win as many trophies as we could. The only thing that comes to mind is remembering all the happy moments, the fun moments, and just feeling really proud."
But for Kerr, it's the people that made it special. "You can go out and play for any football club, but I've been playing for people who help you every day. I can't take credit for anything I've done alone. I'm going to miss the conversations, winding people up, and having fun with all the great people at this football club."
As Chelsea prepares for life without their iconic number 20, fans can only look back at an unforgettable chapter in the club's history—and maybe grab a Kerr jersey while they still can.
