The Denver Nuggets didn't plan on entering the 2026 offseason with so many question marks. After securing the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference playoffs, expectations were high for Nikola Jokić and company to make a deep run following two disappointing postseason exits. But a first-round loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves forced the front office to take a hard look in the mirror.
Now, a bold trade scenario could reshape the Nuggets' future. Yahoo Sports' Tom Haberstroh suggests swapping Jamal Murray for a former Golden State Warriors star who's chasing another ring—Kevin Durant. The idea? Send Murray to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Durant and a 2029 first-round pick.
"Kevin Durant never made sense on a roster without Fred VanVleet (ACL) and Steven Adams (ankle) healthy, and the Durant experiment in Houston may very well be over before it ever really began," Haberstroh wrote. "At his age, Durant isn't a massive upgrade defensively over Murray, but he helps lengthen the Nuggets, who are severely lacking in the athleticism department, especially with Aaron Gordon constantly lumbering."
There's also a financial angle. Durant's contract is $6 million less than Murray's next season, giving Denver some much-needed payroll flexibility as they navigate the tricky apron rules. "By many measures, Durant was better than Murray this season," Haberstroh added.
For Durant, the motivation is clear: another championship before retirement. He joined Golden State in 2016 after a crushing Western Conference Finals loss to the Warriors as a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder, then won two titles with the Dubs in the late 2010s. Since then, stints with the Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns haven't brought him close to that mountaintop.
If Durant believes his best shot at going the distance now lies in Denver, this blockbuster deal could be the move that reshapes the Nuggets—and the entire Western Conference.
