Nuggets offseason outlook: Denver doesn't have many ways too improve

The Nuggets' top-heavy roster has them in a very difficult spot.

The Denver Nuggets are at a crossroads. Despite boasting the world's best player in Nikola Jokić and riding the best season of Jamal Murray's career, their 2026 campaign ended far sooner than expected. The third-seeded Nuggets were bounced in the first round by an injury-depleted Minnesota Timberwolves squad—a result that stings and raises serious questions about the roster's construction.

At the heart of the problem is a top-heavy payroll that leaves Denver with precious few avenues for improvement. Jokić, of course, is untouchable and has no desire to leave. Murray, fresh off his first All-Star appearance (25.4 points, 7.1 assists per game), should also be safe given his elite chemistry with Jokić. But beyond that dynamic duo, the picture gets murky.

Christian Braun's $125 million extension suddenly looks like a potential albatross after a rough season. Peyton Watson is due for a new deal, but his playoff impact remains unproven. Aaron Gordon remains a phenomenal fit, but his contract escalates with age. Meanwhile, the Nuggets find themselves trapped financially: they're likely to soar above the second apron, making any significant free-agent moves nearly impossible.

So what can they do? Sweeping changes probably aren't necessary, but the front office can't afford to be complacent either. If they want to shed salary by moving younger players, they'll need to restock the cupboard through the draft—particularly with guard help and another big man if Jonas Valančiūnas doesn't return.

One thing is certain: whatever happened this season—whether chemistry issues or roster inadequacy—can't happen again. For a team with Jokić in his prime, falling short like this isn't an option. The Nuggets don't have many ways to improve, but they have to find one.
