Notre Dame basketball is wasting no time in the transfer portal this offseason, actively rebuilding a roster hit by six departures. The Fighting Irish made a significant move on Thursday, securing a commitment from Penn graduate transfer Ethan Roberts, a versatile 6-5 guard/forward with valuable NCAA Tournament experience.
Roberts, a Second-Team All-Ivy League selection, led the Quakers in scoring last season with 16.9 points per game. He was a model of efficiency, posting impressive shooting splits of 40.1% from the field, 40.4% from three-point range, and 79.9% from the free-throw line. His offensive versatility was on full display as he scored in double figures 19 times, including eight 20-point performances and two 30-point outbursts.
Beyond the stats, Roberts brings a winning pedigree and postseason savvy to South Bend. He helped guide Penn to an 18-12 record and an NCAA Tournament appearance last season, where they fell to Illinois in the First Round. That experience in high-pressure games will be invaluable for a Notre Dame team looking to climb the ACC standings.
Head coach Micah Shrewsberry praised the addition, highlighting Roberts's well-rounded game and intangibles. "Ethan is going to be a great addition to our program," Shrewsberry stated. "He's a good shooter, but also can score in different ways. He'll bring some added versatility to our team on the offensive end. He's also a great teammate who will add more leadership, competitiveness, & toughness to our group."
With a career total of 1,217 points over stops at Army and Penn, Roberts is a proven scorer who can immediately bolster Notre Dame's perimeter attack. His arrival signals a clear intent from the Irish coaching staff to compete at a high level next season, adding a seasoned veteran who knows how to fill up the stat sheet and impact winning.
