In a rare and historic move, North Korean women's soccer club Naegohyang Women's FC is set to travel to South Korea for a match against Suwon FC Women on May 20, marking the first visit by North Korean athletes to the South in eight years. The announcement, made by South Korea's Unification Ministry, signals a potential thaw in the icy relations between the two nations, as South Korean President Lee Jae Myung seeks to mend ties.

The semi-final clash of the Asian Women's Champions League will see a delegation of 27 players and 12 staff members arrive in South Korea on May 17, according to the ministry. This visit echoes the spirit of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, when North Korean athletes participated in various events and even formed a historic unified ice hockey team with South Korea. However, recent years have seen tensions rise, with North Korea labeling its neighbor its "most hostile state" and abandoning reunification efforts.

Despite the diplomatic undertones, South Korea's government is taking a backseat in this month's match, treating it as an international club event rather than an inter-Korean affair. A Unification Ministry official confirmed that Seoul will provide necessary support for the North Korean athletes during their stay, but otherwise maintain a minimal role.

The action kicks off on May 20 in Suwon, with the North Korean club facing Suwon FC Women at 7 p.m. local time. The winner of this semi-final will advance to the final on May 23, where they'll face the victor of the Melbourne City versus Tokyo Verdy matchup. If Naegohyang Women's FC loses, the team will return home the following day, making this a high-stakes encounter both on and off the pitch.
