The prestigious Koller Classic in York served as a major proving ground this past weekend, and Western Pennsylvania's top boys volleyball teams did not disappoint. North Allegheny and Shaler both powered their way to the semifinals, with the Tigers ultimately capturing the tournament title with a decisive straight-set victory over Central Dauphin in the championship match.
That dominant performance solidified their standing at the summit of the Western Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association (WPIAL) rankings, released Monday to kick off a new week of crucial matches. North Allegheny retains its grip on the top spot in Class 3A, with Shaler holding firm at No. 1 in Class 2A.
In Class 3A, Hempfield made the most significant move, climbing to No. 6 after securing key section wins over Franklin Regional and Norwin. The rest of the formidable Class 3A top ten includes Seneca Valley at No. 2, followed by Butler, Pine-Richland, Baldwin, Hempfield, Mt. Lebanon, Norwin, Upper St. Clair, and Penn-Trafford.
Over in Class 2A, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) edged up to No. 4 following a strong week that featured a win over Hopewell and a competitive battle with No. 3 South Fayette. Hopewell itself bounced back into the rankings at No. 10 after a victory against Ambridge. The Class 2A poll is led by Shaler, Seton LaSalle, South Fayette, OLSH, and Thomas Jefferson, with Derry, Trinity, Montour, Deer Lakes, and Hopewell rounding out the top ten.
This week also spotlighted several standout individual performances, with players like Upper St. Clair's Aidan Chambers, South Fayette's Quinn LeRouix, and Steel Valley's Christian Penn earning recognition for their impactful play on the court.
