Penn State football has been on a recruiting roll under head coach Matt Campbell, building a Top 10 2027 class in record time. But there's one piece missing: a top-tier high school quarterback. After missing out on one elite Massachusetts prospect, the Nittany Lions might be closing in on another.
This week, Peter Bourque—a 6-foot-4 pocket passer ranked as the No. 7 quarterback nationally—chose Virginia Tech over Penn State. Bourque, who originally committed to Michigan, was a top target for the Lions, but he ultimately opted to play for former PSU head coach James Franklin in Blacksburg. It's a tough loss, but the recruiting trail doesn't stop.
Enter Will Wood. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound quarterback from Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, Massachusetts, is the new focus. Five Penn State coaches made a visit to Wood on May 8, signaling just how serious they are about landing him. Wood, a top-30 quarterback prospect, also has strong interest from Boston College (led by former PSU head coach Bill O'Brien), Arkansas, West Virginia, Wake Forest, and Maryland. But national recruiting experts are leaning toward the Nittany Lions as the favorites to secure his commitment—and possibly soon.
Landing Wood would be a major win for Campbell, whose 2027 class has surged from zero commitments to Top 10 status since March. The latest addition came this week with South Carolina running back Aiden Gibson (6-1, 212 pounds), who picked Penn State over Rutgers, Louisville, South Carolina, and North Carolina. With the class gaining momentum, a quarterback like Wood could be the final piece that elevates it to elite status.
