The iconic Champions League ball will be redesigned next year after Nike entered exclusive talks with Uefa to become the official match ball provider for the 2027 to 2031 cycle of the competition. The US sportswear group has beaten off competition from incumbent suppliers Adidas and fellow challengers Puma after offering to double Uefa’s current fee to around $45m per year. Adidas has held the Champions League contract since 2001, when the German company introduced the iconic Finale ball, featuring a star design which mimics the Champions League logo.

Get ready for a new era on the pitch. The iconic UEFA Champions League match ball, a symbol of European football's pinnacle for over two decades, is set for a major redesign. Nike has entered exclusive talks to become the official match ball provider from 2027 to 2031, signaling the end of an era for the familiar star-studded design.

In a significant power play, Nike outbid the current supplier, Adidas, and competitor Puma by reportedly offering to double UEFA's annual fee to around $45 million. This move ends Adidas's long-standing reign, which began in 2001 with the introduction of the iconic "Finale" ball. That design, featuring stars that mirrored the competition's logo, has become instantly recognizable to fans worldwide and has been a constant through countless historic moments.

This marks a return for Nike, who previously supplied the Champions League ball from 1997 to 2001. However, the upcoming change means the famous star pattern, a design right held by Adidas, will make its final appearance at the 2027 Champions League final in Madrid. After that, Nike and UEFA will collaborate on a new design identity for the competition's most important piece of equipment.

The shift is part of a broader commercial restructuring. The tender was managed by Relevent Football Partners, which recently took over the commercial rights for UEFA's club competitions. In a strategic bundling move, the contract now includes match balls for the Europa League and Conference League as well, with Nike securing the rights for all three tournaments. This consolidates the visual identity of UEFA's premier club competitions under a single sportswear giant, promising a cohesive new look for the biggest stages in European football.
