LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The chaos at the start of the Kentucky Derby sometimes decides the most exciting two minutes in sports in a matter of seconds.

The 152nd Kentucky Derby is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable races in recent memory, with no clear favorite and a deep field of contenders ready to battle it out for the roses. As the horses prepare to load into the starting gate at Churchill Downs, the excitement is palpable—and for good reason.

In just two minutes, the chaos of 20 horses bursting from the gate can decide it all. NBC race caller Larry Collmus, who typically zeroes in on the favorite, admits this year is a different story. "I don't know who the favorite is going to be," he says. "It's wide open."

Renegade, trained by Todd Pletcher, opened as the morning-line favorite at 4-1, but that status is far from secure. With contenders like Brad Cox's Commandment and Further Ado, or Bill Mott's Chief Wallabee, the field is stacked with legitimate threats. Chad Brown, trainer of Emerging Market, sums it up perfectly: "You could make an argument for maybe half the horses in the field if they run their very best race and get a good trip."

However, Renegade faces an uphill battle from the inside No. 1 post position—a spot that hasn't produced a Derby winner since Ferdinand in 1986. Pletcher is candid about the challenge: "It's not the one we would have chosen. It's not ideal, but it's what we got." The new starting gate, introduced in 2020, has only added to the difficulty, with Pletcher noting that horses on the rail have been negatively affected. The last horse to finish in the money from that post was Lookin At Lee in 2017.

Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. will guide Renegade through the grueling 1 1/4-mile journey. Though Ortiz has yet to win the Kentucky Derby, he's in peak form as one of the world's top jockeys. "Irad's riding in great form right now," Pletcher says. "They just got to work it out."

With so many variables at play, this Derby is a handicapper's dream and a bettor's puzzle. Whether you're rooting for a longshot or a favorite, one thing is certain: the 152nd running will be a thrilling ride from start to finish.
