After a tough weekend in College Station, the No. 4 Texas Longhorns are back on home turf, looking to regain their momentum. The Horns return to the friendly confines of UFCU Disch-Falk Field tonight, hosting the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in a midweek showdown.
Texas, now 27-7, is eager to bounce back from two losses to rival Texas A&M and extend their current two-game midweek winning streak. They'll face an Islanders squad (16-20) wrapping up a lengthy six-game road trip. While Corpus Christi battles hard under longtime coach Scott Malone, they enter ranked No. 178 in RPI and have struggled against common opponents like Texas A&M and UTSA.
The Islanders' offense has been quiet this season, batting just .260 as a team with limited power. Second baseman Cade Sanchez leads the way with a .366 average, but the team's home run leader, Isaiah Afework, has only five. Their pitching staff, which holds opponents to a .266 average, has been vulnerable with a 6.21 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP.
All eyes will be on the mound for Texas, where freshman right-hander Michael Winter is expected to get the nod. The 6'5", 240-pound flamethrower returned from a month-long illness this past Saturday. Before falling ill, he was impressive, most notably throwing 2.1 scoreless innings against USC Upstate. On the season, Winter remains unscored upon in 7.2 innings of work, boasting a 1-0 record and nine strikeouts.
"I really want to get Michael Winter going," said head coach Jim Schlossnagle on Monday, signaling confidence in the young arm. Junior lefty Kade Bing has also solidified a role in the midweek rotation, providing valuable innings against Texas State and Incarnate Word recently.
At the plate, the Longhorns will look to junior center fielder Aiden Robbins to continue his torrid pace. Robbins has been a force, launching four home runs in his last eight plate appearances, providing a potent spark for the Texas lineup as they aim to get back on track.
