FLORENCE — It was a day of celebration and redemption at the North Regional softball tournament on Tuesday, as two local powerhouses punched their tickets to the state tournament in style.
Top-ranked Hartselle (Class 6A) continued its dominant run, rolling past Athens 9-3 to claim the regional title. The Tigers are now headed to the state tournament for the third straight year—a feat head coach Anna Hanners refuses to take lightly. "Anytime you can get to the state tournament, it's exciting," she said. "It's not easy to do, and it's not something we take for granted."
Hartselle went 3-0 in the tournament, winning each game by an average of seven runs. Senior RC Wolf led the charge with two home runs and four RBIs in Tuesday's championship game, while Aubrey Mize added a hit and two RBIs. "Our team chemistry is just out of this world right now," Wolf said. "Having talent isn't enough. You have to want to play hard for each other."
In Class 4A, West Morgan authored a comeback story for the ages. The Rebels defeated Good Hope 5-2 in a rematch of the Area 13 championship, securing their first state tournament berth since 2014. For senior Chasity Rikard, the moment was surreal: "This doesn't even feel real right now. It's like a dream."
Head coach Morgan Weatherwax celebrated a birthday she'll never forget—her first trip to the state tournament as a player or coach. "I've never been to the state tournament, played in it or coached in it, so this has been the best birthday ever," she said.
The game was deadlocked at 2-2 in the sixth inning when Tensley Suggs delivered a go-ahead RBI double. The Rebels added two more runs in the seventh to seal the win. Payson Terry led the offense with three hits and an RBI, while Maddie Letson chipped in with two hits and an RBI.
What makes West Morgan's run even more remarkable? They started the season 1-10. Since then, they've won 12 of their last 14 games. "We went through the dumps and the slumps, losing a lot of close games to some of the best teams in the state," Weatherwax said. "Our coaches kept telling the girls they could do it, and they finally started seeing: We can play."
In the other Class 6A qualifier game, Athens bounced back to defeat Hazel Green 3-1, securing the second state tournament spot from the regional. Caitlyn Tedford led the Golden Eagles with three hits and an RBI, while pitcher Jaicey Harty struck out eight over seven innings to earn the win.
With both Hartselle and West Morgan heading to Montgomery, the stage is set for what promises to be an unforgettable state tournament. Whether it's the defending champs or the Cinderella story, these teams have proven they belong on the big stage.
