In a thrilling showdown at LaVale Lions Field, the top-ranked Allegany Campers extended their winning streak to 14 games with a dramatic 6-5 walk-off victory over Berlin on Thursday. The win improves Allegany's record to an impressive 15-1, solidifying their status as the team to beat this season.
The game was a rollercoaster of emotions. After falling behind 2-0 through four innings, Allegany finally broke through in the fifth when Desi Hilton drove in a run with a fielder's choice. The real fireworks came in the sixth inning, as the Campers erupted for four runs to take a commanding 5-2 lead. Alyssa Rader tied the game with a double, Jordyn Sneathen—a St. Francis signee—delivered a two-run double for the first lead, and Savannah Walton added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly.
But Berlin (13-2) refused to go quietly. In the top of the seventh, Sam Walker pulled the Mountaineers closer with an RBI double, and an error allowed two more runs to cross the plate, knotting the game at 5-5. With the momentum seemingly shifting, Allegany needed a hero—and found one in Rader. With Tyiss Jessie on first base, Rader lined an opposite-field single to right field. The ball slipped under the fielder's glove, allowing Jessie to race all the way home from first for the winning run.
Savannah Walton earned the win in the circle, recording the final two outs of the seventh inning. Sneathen worked 6⅓ innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out six and walking two. For Berlin, starter Elena Ritchey held Allegany to one run on three hits over five innings, fanning nine batters.
Allegany (6-0 in Western Maryland Athletic Conference play) will host Southern on Saturday at 9 a.m., looking to keep their undefeated conference record intact.
In other action around the region, No. 2 Keyser dominated rival No. 5 Frankfort in a five-inning contest, winning 7-0. Bibs Felton blasted a two-run home run and Leighton Johnson was dominant in the circle, striking out eight while allowing just two hits. Keyser (15-4) broke the game open with five runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth. Brielle Root collected two hits, Sophie Lambka drove in a pair, and Kailynn Burns added a double. Peyton Kimble took the loss for Frankfort (14-10). Keyser faces a doubleheader at North Marion on Saturday, while Frankfort travels to No. 4 Northern on Monday.
Meanwhile, No. 3 Petersburg continued their impressive run with a 5-0 shutout of East Hardy. Kinsley Crites fired a three-hit gem, striking out multiple batters as Petersburg (21-3) won for the 13th time in their last 14 games. The lone loss in that stretch? A 2-0 defeat to Allegany on April 14. Five runs in the third inning were more than enough support for Crites, as Petersburg capitalized on four walks despite being out-hit 5-3.
