Growing up less than half an hour away from Dortmund in a town called Beckum, it comes as no surprise that Borussia Dortmund's new sporting director Nils-Ole Book grew up adoring stars who donned the ...

Born and raised just half an hour from Signal Iduna Park in the small town of Beckum, Nils-Ole Book's love affair with Borussia Dortmund began long before he officially joined the club's front office. The newly appointed sporting director grew up idolizing the legends who wore the famous yellow and black—and now, he's ready to write his own chapter in Dortmund's storied history.

"Because I was a midfielder, first it was Andy Möller. And at some point, of course, he had to come down from the poster. Later it was Tomáš Rosický. My position was a direct reflection of them," Book shared in an interview with the official Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL).

The 40-year-old football executive built his reputation at 2. Bundesliga side SV Elversberg, where he earned his stripes in the Saarland region. But for Book, reaching the German topflight was always a lifelong ambition—and Elversberg never stood in his way. "Yes, it was absolutely a goal to work in the Bundesliga," Book explained. "When you do good work over years—as a club, as a team, and personally—and you are successful, then it becomes a realistic goal to go that way."

Book's move to Dortmund was made possible by a carefully negotiated release clause in his Elversberg contract—a clause he insisted on specifically for this opportunity. "In the end, it came from my conviction that this is a club where I would not want contractual matters to prevent me from taking that step," he said. "My confidant, the president [Frank Holzer], knew exactly what the situation would be if Dortmund got in touch. Because this is a special club for me, there was also this special clause for it."

Stepping into Dortmund during a period of transition—following Sebastian Kehl's departure—Book has maintained a measured, focused approach. His philosophy is simple: work first, play after. And when it comes to the differences between operating at a Bundesliga giant versus a second-division club, Book remains characteristically tight-lipped, preferring to let his actions do the talking.

"Work was the focus at first," Book noted. "But in the first few days, there are introductory rounds and press conferences, and enough comes along. And maybe you do not have that many substantive topics in the first three days to give interviews that fill newspapers."

For Dortmund fans eager to see what the next chapter holds, Book's message is clear: he's here to develop the potential—on and off the pitch. And with a lifelong passion for the club running through his veins, there's every reason to believe this hometown hero is ready to make his mark.
