Bronny James's journey to the NBA has been anything but ordinary. After overcoming a cardiac arrest episode in 2023 and navigating the immense spotlight as the son of LeBron James, he secured a roster spot with the Los Angeles Lakers. While his on-court development continues, a significant off-court move for his personal brand has hit a snag.

Nike recently filed a trademark application for Bronny's "B9" logo, a design featured on sneakers he has worn this season. The logo, with a lowercase gothic 'b' encircling the number '9', was intended for apparel and footwear. However, the United States Patent and Trademark Office has reportedly denied the application.

The refusal was based on a "likelihood of confusion" with an existing trademark. The conflict arises from a similarly named "B9" logo owned by Back9 Golf Apparel, an Austin-based company that has used its mark since 2020 for clothing. The examining attorney found the two logos, both filed for apparel usage, to be too similar for separate registration.

This development puts a temporary hold on the commercial rollout of Bronny's signature branding. For athletes, a unique logo is a crucial part of building a marketable identity and connecting with fans through merchandise. While this is a setback, it's a common hurdle in the business of sports, and Nike can refile a revised application. For now, fans will have to wait to see the "B9" logo on official gear as Bronny continues his playoff run with the Lakers.
