Atletico Madrid are closing in on a permanent deal for Nico Gonzalez, with the Argentine winger set to extend his stay under Diego Simeone after an encouraging loan spell from Juventus. According to transfer expert Matteo Moretto, negotiations between the two clubs are progressing well, with a fee of around €27-28 million (including bonuses) now on the table.

That figure represents just a €5 million discount from the original €32 million buy option included in Gonzalez's loan move last summer. Atletico had made it clear for months they wouldn't trigger the full clause, even though the 28-year-old was one of Simeone's most trusted players during the first half of the season. However, a hamstring injury suffered at Girona just before Christmas—followed by a season-ending muscle issue in training ahead of Atletico's Champions League semifinal against Arsenal—complicated those plans.

Despite the setbacks, Gonzalez's versatility has been a major asset for Simeone. Across 37 appearances in all competitions, he's been deployed as a left winger, left-back, left wing-back, and even on the right side of midfield. His five LaLiga goals—including doubles against Real Sociedad and Elche—all came when he played on the right flank, showcasing his adaptability and finishing touch.

For Atletico, securing Gonzalez on a permanent deal adds valuable depth to both flanks, especially as a left-footed option who can stretch defenses and compete for a starting spot. With Simeone known for getting the most out of his squad, this move feels like a natural fit for a player who has already proven his worth in red and white.
