Nick Nurse rejoined the Philadelphia 76ers after attending his brother's funeral, saying Wednesday that Steve Nurse was a fan who would want him at Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Nurse was in Ankeny, Iowa, on Tuesday, the day between the first two games of the series against the Knicks in New York. Steve Nurse died unexpectedly at age 62 last Wednesday.

In a poignant display of dedication, Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse returned to the sidelines for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks, just one day after laying his brother to rest.

Nurse traveled to Ankeny, Iowa, on Tuesday to attend the funeral of his brother, Steve Nurse, who passed away unexpectedly at age 62 last Wednesday. Despite the emotional weight of the loss, Nurse made it clear that his brother would have wanted him to be exactly where he was—coaching the 76ers.

"I mean, kind of the film and the practice and the game and all that stuff kind of takes care of some time, right?" Nurse said before Wednesday's game. "But I'm here coaching and my brother would expect me to be. He was a huge fan. He wants us to go play, he wants us to play hard, so that's what we're going to try to do tonight."

The timing of the tragedy adds another layer of intensity to what has been a roller-coaster postseason for Philadelphia. The 76ers had just completed a dramatic first-round comeback, rallying from a 3-1 deficit to eliminate the Boston Celtics. That momentum, however, hit a wall in Game 1 against the Knicks, where the Sixers suffered a crushing 137-98 defeat.

Nurse acknowledged the outpouring of support he and his family have received during this difficult time, specifically thanking Knicks head coach Mike Brown for offering his condolences at the start of Tuesday's post-practice press conference. It's a reminder that even in the heat of playoff competition, the basketball community comes together in moments that matter most.

For the 76ers and their fans, seeing Nurse back on the bench is a testament to his resilience—and a subtle message that this team is ready to fight, both for a series win and for a coach who embodies the heart of the game.
