Though they drafted quarterback Fernando Mendoza at No. 1 overall in April, the Raiders are one of five teams without a scheduled primetime game in 2026.

The Las Vegas Raiders may have landed quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft, but that doesn't mean the NFL is ready to hand them a primetime spotlight. In fact, the Raiders are one of five teams without a scheduled primetime game in 2026—a reality that NFL executives say is earned on the field, not at the draft table.

This isn't a new trend. The Tennessee Titans faced the same situation in 2025 after selecting quarterback Cam Ward first overall. Despite the Raiders' storied history and national brand recognition, the team's recent struggles—just seven wins over the last two seasons—have made them a less attractive option for standalone windows like Sunday or Monday night.

During a Friday conference call, NFL VP of broadcasting planning Mike North addressed whether uncertainty surrounding Mendoza's role as Las Vegas' starter played into the decision. "Nobody knows if or when Mendoza might play," North explained. "It would certainly be great if we knew. We don't. But they went out and signed a very competent veteran quarterback."

North pointed to flexibility as a key factor. If the Raiders hover around .500 and stay playoff-relevant midseason, they could find themselves flexed into bigger national windows. "If they are playoff-relevant, they will find themselves flexed into bigger national television windows, whether it's Sunday night, Monday night, or just a bigger footprint on a Sunday afternoon," he said.

Drawing a direct comparison to the Titans, North emphasized that draft capital alone doesn't command primetime exposure. "We don't draft our way into primetime. We play our way into primetime."

For Raiders fans, the message is clear: Mendoza's potential is exciting, but the team's path to the national stage runs through wins. Head coach Klint Kubiak has indicated a preference for starting a veteran over a rookie early on, but if Mendoza does take the reins, he'll need to deliver results quickly to earn that primetime slot.
