Kansas City knows when it'll play in Week 1.

The NFL schedule makers might have just handed Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs a small but meaningful advantage for the 2026 season.

Mahomes has been working tirelessly to return from a season-ending knee injury, and now he has a clear target date to aim for. The Chiefs will play the final game of Week 1—a Monday night showdown against the Denver Broncos on September 14. That extra handful of days compared to the earliest possible start could make all the difference in his recovery timeline.

According to reports, Mahomes' torn ACL occurred at a point where a nine-month recovery is feasible—right at the edge of the fastest possible return from such an injury. The late Monday night slot gives him every possible hour to heal and prepare.

Of course, the Chiefs won't rush their franchise quarterback. They've brought in Justin Fields as a solid backup option should Mahomes need more time. But coming off a disappointing 6-11 season, Kansas City knows they can't afford to waste any momentum. The team feels the urgency to turn things around quickly.

So while caution will be the priority, don't be surprised if number 15 is under center when the lights come on that Monday night. The schedule makers gave him a chance—and Patrick Mahomes has never needed more than that.
