It's crunch-time for all 32 NFL teams as they prepare for this weekend's draft, which kicks off on Thursday night in Pittsburgh, Penn. And for the Carolina Panthers, the options could be crunching down to Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman—who has emerged as the perceived favorite in the first round.
However, not every analyst agrees. According to Mike Renner at CBS Sports, Carolina is one of at least five teams around the league that are still in "deep decision mode." Renner also believes the Panthers can be aggressive with the 19th overall pick:
"They've hit every need on this roster seemingly on paper. It looks good. There's nowhere they have to go," he stated. "I think they're going to be aggressive, going all in on this sort-of window that they have here. Thinking they are close given the success they had last season."
This tracks, as long as you consider winning the weakest division in the league as a window.
What matters is that the disposition Renner describes is probably right in regards to the draft—meaning the Panthers won't be picking exclusively for need. That approach allows them to take advantage of the strengths of this particular class.
That also aligns with all the signs that they're targeting a safety early—which isn't considered a premium position, but is a spot with strong prospects at the top of the board.
Along with Thieneman, Toledo's Emmanuel McNeil-Warren has been floated as a possibility for Carolina.
