Newcastle United Women ended their WSL2 campaign in sixth place after a hard-fought 1-0 defeat to Durham at Gateshead International Stadium.

The match carried an emotional weight, as midfielder Molly Pike announced her retirement from football for personal reasons. Despite the somber backdrop, the stadium was filled with a strong sense of unity and support from the fans.

With manager Tanya Oxtoby serving a suspension, the team made just one change: Oona Sevenius replaced Freya Gregory in the starting lineup.

On a scorching hot day, Newcastle came out with intensity. Jemma Purfield launched a long ball forward that found Jordan Nobbs on the run. Nobbs attempted a header over keeper Catriona Sheppard, but the ball drifted just wide of the post.

The pace dipped after that early chance, but Newcastle soon threatened again. Beth Lumsden's pass into the box was recycled by Emily Murphy at the back post, setting up Morgan Gautrat for a volley that Sheppard easily collected.

Despite Newcastle looking the more dangerous side, it was former Magpie Amber Stobbs who broke the deadlock. She controlled a bouncing ball from Michaela Foster, took a touch inside Aoife Mannion, and lobbed Anna Tamminen to give Durham the lead.

The second half was a subdued affair, with both teams struggling to find rhythm. Durham were content to protect their slender lead, while Newcastle found it tough to carve out clear chances. Their best opportunity came from a Lumsden strike outside the box that rolled gently past the post.

Durham nearly doubled their advantage when Mollie Lambert dispossessed Deanna Cooper and sprinted from the halfway line into the box. But the number eight couldn't compose herself and blazed high and wide.

Newcastle failed to clear a Durham corner, leaving Foster unmarked on the penalty spot. However, her guided header sailed over Tamminen's crossbar.

In a match lacking quality and clear-cut chances, substitute Emilia Larsson found space in the box after being picked out by Demi Stokes. But with the ball bouncing in front of her, she smashed a wild effort off target.

The defeat capped a season of mixed results for Newcastle, but the team showed heart and togetherness in difficult circumstances. For fans looking to show their support, our collection of Newcastle United Women's gear is the perfect way to celebrate the squad's resilience and passion for the game.
