The New York Yankees' bullpen has emerged as a glaring early-season concern in the 2026 campaign, continuing a troubling trend of volatility from the previous year. Recent attempts to stabilize the relief corps, including demoting Jake Bird and promoting Angel Chivilli, have backfired quickly, with Chivilli surrendering a home run in his debut.

While the trade market offers few impactful solutions this early, the Yankees have a compelling internal option waiting in the wings: flamethrowing right-hander Yovanny Cruz. Signed this past winter after a stint in the Red Sox organization, Cruz turned heads in Spring Training by firing four scoreless innings with six strikeouts and, most notably, lighting up radar guns at 102 mph.

Despite the fan buzz generated by his electric velocity, Cruz began the season in Triple-A, partly due to a crowded 40-man roster and limited spring innings. However, given the current bullpen's fragile state, making room for his arm talent is a gamble worth taking. While command has been his historical bugaboo, preventing a big-league debut thus far, Cruz has shown promising control this year, walking just two batters over 7.1 innings.

The Yankees' relief situation is clearly broken, and injecting a power arm like Cruz could provide the jolt it desperately needs. In a bullpen searching for answers, the potential upside of a 102-mph fastball far outweighs the risk, making a call-up not just an option, but a necessity for a team with championship aspirations.
