New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh has publicly addressed the increasingly tense contract standoff with star defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence. The situation escalated recently with reports that Lawrence, a cornerstone of the Giants' defense, has requested a trade after extension talks reached an impasse.
Despite having two years left on the four-year, $90 million extension he signed just last year, Lawrence reportedly believes his time with the Giants is over and no longer wishes to negotiate a new deal with the team. This puts the franchise in a difficult position with one of its most impactful players.
Coach Harbaugh, speaking to the New York Post, struck a diplomatic tone, emphasizing the team's dual goals. "We are working together to get the best outcome for the Giants team," Harbaugh stated. "We also respect Dexter fully as a person and player and want him to be happy. We are doing everything we can. As best we can. As responsibly as we can."
The Giants do hold considerable leverage in any negotiation. Lawrence remains under contract through the 2027 season, and the deal contains no remaining guaranteed money. General Manager Joe Schoen had previously characterized discussions with Lawrence's camp as productive, underscoring the organization's desire to keep the 28-year-old nose tackle.
However, if a trade becomes inevitable, the Giants' asking price is understandably steep. Team sources indicate they would seek a significant return, potentially a top-10 draft pick or a first-round selection plus additional assets. For now, the team is not actively shopping the defensive anchor, and league-wide interest has been reportedly limited, leaving this critical situation unresolved as the offseason continues.
