Scotland's golf scene just got a thrilling new addition. Old Petty at Cabot Highlands officially opened its fairways on Friday, and it's already turning heads with a landscape that's anything but ordinary.

Set along the stunning Scottish coastline with sweeping ocean views and a stretch hugging a tidal bay, this course is a masterclass in ground game strategy. But here's the twist: the land wasn't always this interesting. After more than a century of farming, the natural humps and bumps—those beloved features of classic links golf—had been flattened. That's where architects Tom Doak and Clyde Johnson stepped in with a bold vision.

Instead of accepting the smooth, tilted slate left behind, they got to work recreating what time and agriculture had erased. The result? A perfectly wrinkled playground. The fairways are packed with dramatic micro-contours, and the firm turf keeps golf balls rolling in every direction imaginable. This isn't a course where you can just swing away—you'll need to think carefully about how the ball might bounce after it lands.

"The most important thing you can have in golf is a difference between where the ball lands and where it winds up," Doak explained after a preview round last year. "Here, it's because of the firmness of the ground and the wind. And you don't get that in every place that you work. But when you have it, it's much more interesting."

For golfers who love the unpredictability and creativity of links-style play, Old Petty delivers. It's a course that rewards strategic thinking and adaptability—qualities every player can appreciate, whether you're shopping for new gear or planning your next bucket-list round.
