Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. came to the team with a clear mission: prove he can do more than just spot up and shoot. But during his time in Brooklyn, he also got a front-row seat to some of the team's behind-the-scenes drama—and he didn't hold back when asked about former teammate Cam Thomas.
In a recent appearance on the "Road Trippin' Show" podcast, Porter shared his honest take on Thomas, who was waived by the Nets during the February trade deadline and later signed with the Milwaukee Bucks. "I know that when it comes to putting the ball in the hoop and making tough shots, he's one of the best," Porter said. "But... in the NBA, it's a lot more to the NBA and sticking around than just that."
Porter spent only about half of the 2025-26 season alongside Thomas, but it was enough to see what might have led to his teammate's uncertain future. "For Cam, I think he was frustrated with a lot of things. Also, his personality—because even my brother said back in the EYBL days when they were playing in high school, Cam was just a certain type of way," Porter explained. "Just real quiet, stuck to himself, always had his headphones in listening to [artist NBA] Young Boy every day and all he wanted to do is hoop. He don't really socialize."
Thomas entered the season on shaky ground after contract negotiations with the Nets fell apart last summer. He ended up taking a one-year, $8 million qualifying offer, hoping to boost his value on the court. And for a while, it looked like the plan was working. Through the first seven games, Thomas was averaging an impressive 24.4 points per game. But everything changed on Nov. 5 when he injured his left hamstring against the Indiana Pacers.
After returning to the lineup in late December, Thomas found himself in a bench role that never clicked. His scoring dropped to just 12.8 points per game, and he shot a disappointing 39.8% from the field. The Nets eventually waived him at the trade deadline, and he finished the season playing 18 games for the Bucks—a far cry from the breakout campaign he was hoping for.
