The NFL's relationship with Netflix has been expanded — and extended.

Netflix and the NFL just took their relationship to the next level, extending their broadcast deal through the 2029-30 season. What started as a holiday experiment is quickly becoming a major player in the league's media lineup.

According to Sports Business Journal's Austin Karp, Netflix's revised agreement now matches the contract terms of traditional powerhouses like Fox, CBS, NBC, Prime Video, and YouTube. That's a big leap for a streaming service that entered the NFL game just two years ago.

Back in 2024, Netflix dipped its toes into live football with a pair of Christmas Day games. Fast forward to this year, and the streamer is set to air five games, including a historic Week 1 matchup between the 49ers and Rams from Australia, plus the league's first-ever Thanksgiving Eve game. It's a clear sign that Netflix is serious about carving out its own space in the NFL calendar.

This extension isn't just about adding more games—it's a strategic move to protect Netflix's Christmas turf. As the league renegotiates with other broadcast partners, Netflix wants to ensure its holiday slot stays secure. The streamer currently has three other games slated for 2026, though it's not yet clear if they're part of this new four-year deal.

While Netflix has publicly downplayed interest in a full-season package, the sports world knows better. In the ever-evolving landscape of NFL broadcasting, today's "no" could be tomorrow's blockbuster bid. This deal might just be the opening play in a much bigger game plan.
