In a showdown that truly lived up to the rivalry, the Nebraska Cornhuskers doubled up Creighton 8-4 to sweep the season series, proving that grit and timely hitting can overcome any weather-related jitters.
While other top programs around the country opted to cancel games to protect their RPI, Nebraska embraced the challenge, taking the field at The Chuck in Omaha for the final matchup of the season series against their in-state foes. And for the Cornhuskers, the result was a statement win that sets the stage for a promising stretch ahead.
The most encouraging story of the night? The resurgence of pitcher Cooper Katskee. The Miami (OH) transfer had been battling through a rough patch, often surrendering early home runs that put his team in a hole. But tonight was different. Katskee delivered his best start of the second half, scattering just two hits over five scoreless innings while keeping Creighton batters off balance with a sharp breaking ball. For Nebraska to make a deep run in the coming weeks, they need this version of Katskee to show up every time he takes the mound.
Nebraska wasted no time setting the tone, posting two runs in the top of the first. Jeter Worthley singled and came home on a Case Sanderson base hit, while Dylan Carey—after being plunked by a pitch—scored on a Drew Grego double. The Cornhuskers added another run in the second when Jett Buck led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Rhett Stokes, and crossed the plate on a throwing error by the Creighton first baseman. By the end of the second inning, Big Red was up 3-0 and in full control.
The offense kept the pressure on in the fifth, sending ten batters to the plate. Worthley led off with his second hit of the night, and Carey drew a walk. With Sanderson at the plate, Nebraska executed a perfect double steal, putting two runners in scoring position and setting the stage for the knockout blow.
With the series sweep secured, the Cornhuskers can now turn their full attention to the Gophers, carrying momentum and a renewed sense of confidence into their next challenge.
