NCAA regional three-peat? Illinois golfers enter with optimism

May 16—URBANA — Like always, the only goal for the Illinois men's golf team at the upcoming NCAA Regional in Athens, Ga., is straightforward. Win. Period. It has worked like a charm the last two years, with Illinois taking regional titles at Stanford, Calif., in 2024 and at Urbana's Atkins Golf Club in 2025. "If you win a regional title, it shows you're playing good at the end of the year," ...

The Illinois men's golf team is heading to the NCAA Regional in Athens, Georgia, with one clear mission: win. It's a goal they've executed to perfection the past two seasons, claiming regional titles at Stanford in 2024 and on their home turf at Atkins Golf Club in 2025. For head coach Mike Small, a regional championship isn't just a trophy—it's a statement that the team is peaking at the right time.

"If you win a regional title, it shows you're playing good at the end of the year," Small said. "The regular season is long. The whole purpose is to get better, improve, and build a foundation so you can make the postseason."

This year, Illinois enters as the No. 2 seed in a loaded 13-team field at the University of Georgia Golf Course. The top seed is none other than No. 1-ranked Auburn, with other strong contenders including Vanderbilt, BYU, Georgia, Louisville, Kansas, and Northwestern rounding out the lineup. The three-round regional tees off Monday, and only the top five teams will advance to the NCAA Championships in Carlsbad, California, from May 29 to June 3. Illinois has made that cut 16 times in the last 17 years—a testament to their consistent excellence.

Small knows what it takes to win regionals. With seven titles already at Illinois, he's tied for third all-time in NCAA history, just one behind legends John Fields of Texas and Alan Bratton of Oklahoma State. For him, the postseason is where legacies are forged.

"Once they get into regionals, the gloves are off," Small said. "You're playing for real. You're playing for legacy. You're playing for history. This is what people remember, and this is what the kids come here to do."

The Illini are riding a wave of momentum after a thrilling near-comeback at the Big Ten Championships, where they rallied from 15 strokes down in the final round before finishing just four shots behind champion UCLA. That fiery finish has the team believing they can carry that energy into Athens.

"That's the plan," Small said. "We've talked at length about it. To be an athlete in this sport, you have to go out and impose your will on the golf course. You can't just be a product of what happens. If things don't go well, you can't feel sorry for yourself. You have to be scratching and clawing for everything."

With a proven track record, a hungry roster, and a coach chasing history, Illinois is poised to make another deep postseason run. For fans and players alike, the message is simple: the hunt for a three-peat starts now.
