Big changes are coming to March Madness, and they're official. The NCAA Division I men's and women's basketball committees have voted unanimously to expand the tournament to 76 teams starting in 2027, clearing the biggest hurdle on the path to a larger field.

This move, first reported by CBS Sports' Matt Norlander, still needs approval from additional committees—including the oversight committees and the Division I cabinet meeting on May 22, followed by the NCAA board of governors. But make no mistake: Thursday's vote was the real lever-pull, and what's left is largely seen as a formality.

So, what does this mean for the tournament we know and love? For the first time since the First Four was introduced in 2011, the field is getting bigger. That 2011 expansion followed the 2001 addition of a single play-in game, which took the bracket from 64 to 65 teams. Now, we're looking at eight new at-large bids entering the mix.

The current First Four format will be replaced by a 24-team "opening round" held on Tuesday and Wednesday after Selection Sunday. The 12 winners from that round will then slide into the traditional 64-team bracket, which tips off on Thursday as it always has.

Expansion has certainly sparked debate among fans and analysts, but barring an 11th-hour reversal like we saw back in 2011, it looks like this is the new reality. For teams on the bubble and fans dreaming of Cinderella runs, the road to the Final Four just got a little wider.
