The Boston Celtics are facing a pivotal offseason after a stunning first-round playoff exit—one that saw them become the first team in franchise history to blow a 3-1 series lead. That collapse has sparked serious questions about whether the core of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown can still deliver another championship.
With Brown eligible for a massive two-year, $142 million extension this summer, his future in Boston is suddenly a hot topic. While trade rumors have swirled about the Celtics using Brown as a centerpiece to land two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks, one NBA writer is throwing cold water on that idea.
Bleacher Report's Dan Favale argues that a Brown-for-Giannis swap is unlikely, mainly because the Bucks probably don't want to build around a 30-year-old Brown who will command a hefty new contract. NBA insider Jake Fischer has even suggested that any deal involving Brown and Antetokounmpo would require a third team to make the numbers work.
Instead, Favale predicts that if the Celtics do move Brown, they'll be looking for a different kind of return. "The Celtics may be more apt to consider scenarios that net them multiple picks and players of their own as they look to stay under the tax for another year and make upgrades to the frontline, ball-handling and creator ranks," he wrote. In other words, Boston might prioritize depth and flexibility over a single superstar.
Brown has proven he can be a No. 1 option this season, making him a valuable trade chip. Favale lists the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Houston Rockets, Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Toronto Raptors as potential landing spots if a deal goes down.
Of course, trading Brown for anything less than a two-time MVP like Antetokounmpo might not sit well with fans at first. But in the long run, adding picks and complementary talent could help Tatum continue leading the Celtics without the financial strain of Brown's max contract. Sometimes, the smartest move isn't the flashiest one—it's the one that sets you up for sustained success.
