NBA roundup: Magic rule out Franz Wagner for pivotal Game 6 vs. Pistons

Magic forward Franz Wagner will miss his second straight game when Orlando attempts to eliminate the Pistons in Game 6 Friday.

The Orlando Magic will have to punch their ticket to the second round without one of their biggest stars. Forward Franz Wagner has been ruled out for Game 6 against the Detroit Pistons on Friday, marking his second straight absence due to a right calf strain.

Wagner, who starred at the University of Michigan, initially suffered the injury during the second half of Game 4—a game the Magic won 94-88 to take a commanding 3-1 series lead. Without him, Detroit fought back with a 116-109 victory at home in Game 5, keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley didn't sugarcoat the impact of losing his versatile forward. "It impacts quite a bit," Mosley said after Game 5. "You obviously know how he has been playing and what he has been doing for us. More than anything, you just hate to see him out... For us, it changes things in a big way, but obviously, we always talk about next-man-up mentality."

This season has been a rollercoaster for the 24-year-old German. Wagner played just 34 regular-season games after suffering a left ankle injury back on Dec. 7. He made brief returns in January and February before another setback kept him sidelined until April 1. When healthy, he's been a force, averaging 20.6 points per game during the regular season.

In the first four games of this series, Wagner still managed to contribute 16.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and an impressive 2.8 steals per game. His absence leaves a significant hole on both ends of the floor as Orlando looks to close out the series on their home court.

Meanwhile, in Cleveland...

The Cavaliers believe they've passed one major test—now they need to prove they can finish the job. After taking a 3-2 series lead over the Toronto Raptors with a gritty 125-120 comeback win at home on Wednesday, Cleveland faces a crucial Game 6 on the road Friday night.

"We kind of passed that mental toughness test," Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson said. "Now the big one is like, 'Can you go and beat this team on the road? Can we go in there and go take this,' because we haven't shown we can yet."

Both series are heating up, and with playoff intensity at its peak, every possession—and every player—matters more than ever.
