The intensity of the NBA play-in tournament took a concerning turn Tuesday night as Miami Heat star Bam Adebayo suffered a lower back injury following a contentious play involving Charlotte's LaMelo Ball.
The incident occurred in the first half when Adebayo secured a rebound after a blocked Ball layup. As Adebayo landed near the baseline, Ball, who was on the floor, reached out and grabbed the back of Adebayo's left ankle. This caused the Heat center to lose his balance and fall hard onto his tailbone, remaining on the court in immediate pain.
He required assistance to leave the floor and was eventually ruled questionable to return with a lower back injury. The play sparked significant controversy, as no foul was called on Ball in real time.
Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra was visibly furious on the sideline, pleading with officials to review the play for a potential flagrant foul. Those requests were denied. Post-game, referee Zach Zarba explained to the broadcast that the play was not eligible for review because the game was not immediately stopped and there had been a change of possession.
The injury poses a massive challenge for Miami. Adebayo, a three-time All-Star and the defensive anchor of the Heat, is arguably the most versatile big man in the league. His presence on both ends of the floor is irreplaceable. At the time of his exit, he had contributed 6 points and 3 rebounds in just 11 minutes.
With the game hanging in the balance—the Hornets led 30-26 when Adebayo went down, though Miami took a 54-52 lead into halftime—his potential absence for the second half could dramatically shift the momentum of this win-or-go-home contest.
