Tracy McGrady is trading the broadcast booth for the college sidelines in a move that's as heartwarming as it is headline-worthy. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer—who famously jumped straight from high school to the NBA—is finally heading to college, and he's bringing his son along for the ride.
McGrady has accepted a role as a strategic advisor for the men's basketball program at Wagner College, a small Division I school in Staten Island, New York. The timing couldn't be more perfect: his son, Laymen McGrady, recently committed to the Seahawks after a redshirt season at Oral Roberts.
"Stepping into this role is really personal for me since I did not go to college," McGrady said in a statement. "Being around this community, where gritty coaches like P.J. Carlesimo and Dan Hurley got their start, excites me just as much as basketball."
It's a full-circle moment for the seven-time NBA All-Star, who has been a familiar face on NBC's NBA playoff coverage this spring. Now, instead of analyzing the game from a studio, he'll be shaping it from the ground up—overseeing player development, recruiting, and helping build Wagner's name, image, and likeness (NIL) strategy.
Wagner president Jeffrey Doggett welcomed the addition, noting that McGrady "brings a unique combination of perspective, excellence, and commitment to development both on and off the court."
For McGrady, who never played in the NCAA, this is more than just a basketball gig. It's a chance to give back in a league—the Northeast Conference—where blue-collar grit meets big dreams. And with his son in uniform, you can bet those practices just got a whole lot more interesting.
