NBA analyst throws shots at Luka Doncic, Joel Embiid over availability issues

ESPN NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins managed to throw shots at two NBA superstars with one quote. During a recent appearance on First Take, Perkins expressed concerns about the durability and availability of Los Angeles Lakers star guard Luka Doncic, and he compared Doncic to oft-injured Sixers center Joel Embiid to illustrate his point.

NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins didn't hold back recently, taking aim at two of the league's biggest stars—Luka Dončić and Joel Embiid—in a single, pointed critique. During a fiery segment on ESPN's First Take, Perkins questioned the durability and availability of Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Dončić, drawing a direct comparison to Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid, who has a well-documented history of missing crucial games.

Dončić, a generational talent known for his scoring prowess, sat out the entire 2026 postseason due to a hamstring injury. That absence, Perkins argued, is part of a troubling pattern. "For the last three years, it's been something come postseason time, whether it's been out of shape or dealing with some type of injuries, and majority of the time it comes to soft tissue injuries," Perkins said.

While acknowledging Dončić's undeniable skill—calling him "one of the best scorers that this game has ever seen"—Perkins didn't sugarcoat his concerns. "If you're the Lakers, you have a concern there, because you could get through the regular season, and Luka is a fantastic talent. We're not going to take that away from him. But when it comes to being reliable, Luka is starting to get in that territory of Joel Embiid. When you need him the most, and it comes postseason time, he's not available."

For Lakers fans, this is a sobering thought. The team invested heavily in Dončić to be their cornerstone, but if availability becomes a recurring issue, it could reshape the franchise's championship aspirations. Meanwhile, Embiid's own injury struggles have long been a talking point in Philadelphia, making Perkins' comparison all the more stinging.

As the NBA landscape shifts, reliability is becoming just as valuable as raw talent. Whether Dončić can shake this narrative—or if it follows him like it has Embiid—remains one of the league's most compelling storylines.
