As Liverpool prepares for a future without Andy Robertson, the question of who will fill the void at left-back is becoming a hot topic. With the transfer window looming, the Premier League champions have plenty of priorities to juggle, and financing a new left-back might not be at the top of the list—at least for now.
The club's academy is brimming with promise, offering potential solutions from within. Youngsters like Luke Chambers, Owen Beck, and Clae Ewing—some currently gaining valuable experience out on loan—could step up to provide cover. It's a classic Liverpool approach: developing homegrown talent to meet first-team needs.
However, a more immediate option might be the return of Kostas Tsimikas. According to a report from Lewis Steele, the Greek international is expected to serve as understudy for the 2024-25 season, the final year of his contract before it expires in 2027. Steele raises a valid question: "Is he good enough for that, though?"
Tsimikas, now 29, spent last season on loan at Roma with no purchase option included. His time in Serie A was marked by inconsistent form, and Roma have no plans to make the move permanent. This leaves Liverpool manager Arne Slot with a decision to reintegrate the title-winning defender into the squad, allowing sporting director Richard Hughes to allocate transfer funds elsewhere.
With pressing needs at centre-back and in wide attacking positions, every pound saved on a left-back replacement for Robertson could be better spent strengthening other areas. For now, it seems the Reds will look inward, relying on a mix of youth and experience to hold the fort.
