After 35 unforgettable seasons, Mt. Zion's Greg Blakey has coached his final regular-season game—closing the chapter on a legendary career that will be remembered for far more than the numbers on the scoreboard.
Blakey's resume reads like a hall of fame plaque: over 800 career wins, more than 20 conference championships, and two trips to the state tournament. He ranks among the top 25 winningest high school softball coaches in the nation and sits fourth all-time in IHSA coaching wins. These are staggering achievements by any measure, but for Blakey, the true legacy isn't found in the record books.
"You hope you teach them a little bit of softball, but you hope to teach them some life skills and life lessons," Blakey said. "Life's pretty tough, and sometimes you have to teach kids how to grind it out in order to be successful. You hope that goes to softball, and you really hope it transfers into life as well."
That philosophy has resonated deeply within the Mt. Zion community. Athletic Director Diann Durbin spoke warmly of Blakey's impact, saying, "He's definitely going to be missed next year. Wonderful person, wonderful coach. We're really, really happy with all the years that he's put in and dedicated his time here to Mt. Zion."
While his final regular season game has come and gone, Blakey isn't walking away from the diamond entirely. He plans to stay close to the game he loves—this time from the bleachers, watching his granddaughters play. It's a fitting next step for a coach who has always believed that softball is just a vehicle for something greater: preparing young athletes for the game of life.
