Add another award to star Spartans freshman Porter Martone's resume.
Martone was named the USCHO Rookie of the Year award winner on Wednesday. This award was handed out through voting by the USCHO.com staff members.
In his lone season with the Spartans, Martone recorded 25 goals and 25 assists to become one of only five freshman in Michigan State history to reach 50 points in a season. His strong play landed him as on the All-Big Ten First Team and All-Big Ten Freshman Team. He was also nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, which is given out to the top player in college hockey.
Shortly after the Spartans' season ended, Martone made the decision to turn pro and has been an instant impact player for the Philadelphia Flyers. He recorded goals in each of his first two NHL Playoff games and seems destined for a very successful career in the league.
