A former Spartan has been selected as a first round pick in the Canadian Football League (CFL) Draft.
The CFL held is annual draft on Tuesday, with one Spartan landing as a first round pick. The Saskatchewan Roughriders selected Michigan State defensive back Malcolm Bell with the No. 9 overall pick.
Bell was one of two Spartans selected in the CFL Draft on Tuesday, with defensive teammate Devynn Cromwell selected in the third round by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Bell transferred to Michigan State ahead of the 2025 season after playing four years at UConn. He appeared in all 12 games for the Spartans during his lone season in East Lansing, Mich., recording 49 tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack and six passes defended.
Bell has also received a minicamp invite from the Cleveland Browns, which I would assume he'll first pursue before potentially joining the Roughriders. If things don't work out in the NFL for Bell, it at least appears he has a pretty solid spot for him in the CFL to continue his football career.
