The Missouri Southern State University men's golf team wrapped up their MIAA Championship campaign in Jefferson City, finishing tied for 10th in the 11-team field. While the final standings weren't what the Lions hoped for, the tournament showcased a resilient team that saved its best for last.
The Lions showed promise early, led by Zachary Gardner's opening-round 75. However, a challenging second round on Tuesday put them in a tough spot heading into the final day. True to their competitive spirit, the team responded with their lowest collective score of the championship on Wednesday, an 8-over round that featured strong bounce-back performances from Britten Coy and Gardner, who each carded a 1-over 73.
Individually, Max Templeman was the Lions' top finisher, posting consistent rounds to land in 22nd place at 9-over par. Coy finished 29th, while Gardner's final-round surge moved him up to 36th overall.
The tournament was dominated by the University of Central Oklahoma, who captured their second consecutive MIAA title with an impressive 11-under team total, sweeping the top three individual spots. The Lions finished just one stroke behind conference rival Pittsburg State for ninth place.
Attention now shifts to the MSSU women's golf team, who begin their quest for an MIAA title this Monday at the Mules National Golf Club in Warrensburg. We wish them the best of luck as they take to the course!
