In a thrilling turn of events, Mesa Mountain View pulled off a stunning upset against No. 2 Phoenix Desert Vista, winning 7-3 on Tuesday, May 12, and avenging a previous 11-5 loss in the state high school softball playoffs. Now, the Toros face their biggest challenge yet: taking on top seed Queen Creek in the 6A semifinals.
As the No. 10 seed, Mountain View knows the odds are stacked against them. Queen Creek (30-1) has been dominant, winning their first two playoff games by a combined score of 19-0 and even defeating two-time defending state champion Phoenix Xavier Prep 9-1 to reach the semifinals. But the Toros are not backing down.
"It takes every single one of our athletes believing in what we can do," said Mountain View coach Fernando Lopez. "Whether they're on the bench cheering or coming in to base run, we need everyone loud and full of energy from start to finish. We have some great athletes, and we're ready."
Key to their success is pitcher Daniella Gloria, who delivered a standout performance against Desert Vista, allowing eight hits and just one earned run. Her poise on the mound has been a game-changer for the Toros, who have won three straight games to climb out of the losers' bracket. At the plate, Paige Hunt led the charge with three hits and two RBIs, while Keelie Goodman added a home run to seal the victory.
Now, all eyes are on the semifinal matchup against Queen Creek at Mesa High on Wednesday, May 13. The Bulldogs have been nearly unstoppable since their only loss, a 3-2 defeat to Mesa Red Mountain in mid-April. But Mountain View is riding a wave of momentum and determination.
"We knew going into yesterday that we had a good opportunity," Lopez said. "If you look at last week's game, we controlled most of it—we just had one inning that didn't go our way. The message was simple: play our softball for all seven innings and come out with a win."
Meanwhile, Xavier Prep is fighting for a third straight state championship. Coming out of the losers' bracket, the Gators edged No. 12 Phoenix Sandra Day O'Connor 2-1 in a nail-biter, thanks to a no-hitter by Sydney Root, who struck out nine. O'Connor's only run was unearned, highlighting Xavier's defensive strength. They'll face No. 3 Phoenix Pinnacle in the other 6A semifinal.
With both teams showing incredible resilience, the 6A semifinals promise to be a showcase of elite high school softball. Whether it's Mountain View's Cinderella story or Xavier's quest for a three-peat, fans are in for an unforgettable showdown.
